movie marathon!

watched a lot of movies today, 5 at once!

capote, the interpreter, gangs of new york, the devil wears prada, inside man

liked the interpreter, for its pretty witty script (the dialogue), devil wears prada for the relatively lightness as compared to the other movies, gangs of new york is beyond my comprehension, only got the gist of the story, not any of the intricacies... the 'bank robbers' from inside man were really smart, that's about all there is to the movie, i think

capote was a really interesting character development-type of movie... i like movies where a character's personality is etched, no, fleshed out, in good detail, by means of showing how he responds and thinks, not to some big mofo situation like a catastrophe the size of the world, but of smaller magnitude but by no means less important for certain people, such as urm, a lawsuit involving a murder?

which is why i like studio ghibli (japan animation company that produced spirited away and howl's moving castle, amongst other things most of you would probably not know), i mean, studio ghibli's kind of animation films. simple plot, good portrayal of the protagonists and all... and when you're not interested in the storyline, there's always the scenery to ogle at... i guess the good thing about animating everything the old fashioned way (YES, they draw and paint everything by hand, manually) is that so much emphasis is placed on picture composition...

i tell you what animation films you must watch from studio ghibli:

grave of the fireflies - story about a japanese boy and his little sister who tried to survive WWII
the cat returns - somewhat humourous, plus its pacing is a bit faster than the usual ghibli film haha.
spirited away - amazing (when i watched it the first time)
howl's moving castle - touching.
princess mononoke - quite thought provoking.
totoro - cute, simple, lighthearted :)

i think nausicaa, laputa, porco rosso, and, OMG pom poko! are films you'll watch only if you can get through the above five. don't watch pom poko haha! a bit dumb, i think. basically about racoon-like mythical creatures camouflaging as people and inanimate objects and animals with their testicles to adapt to their changing landscape (humans destroying their forest)

don't watch: 'only yesterday' if you hate character development and reminiscing about past stuff, in slow motion. i personally found it very nice, though.

if you want you can borrow these films from me, i have quite a good collection of studio ghibli films :)

ok we've decided to watch a 6th, vanity fair... here we go!
